Business verification

Business GST verification

Check that the company behind a GST number is real, correctly named and still registered.

Example:

Five things to check on a company GSTIN

The number is well-formed

15 characters, a valid state code, an embedded PAN and a correct check character.

The registration exists

The GSTIN resolves to a real registration rather than a typo or a fabricated number.

The name matches

The legal or trade name returned should match the company you are dealing with.

The status is active

A cancelled or suspended registration is a reason to pause before paying an invoice.

The state code fits

The first two digits should match the state of the place of business on the document.

When businesses run this check

Most commonly at onboarding, before releasing a first payment, and when an invoice value is large enough that a reversed input tax credit would hurt. If you are checking a party that supplies you, the supplier GST verification page covers the procurement workflow, and GSTIN details lists every field a lookup can return.

Frequently asked questions

How do I verify a company's GST number?

Enter the company's 15-character GSTIN in the search box above. The result shows the legal name, trade name, registration status and taxpayer type returned by our verification source.

What if the company name does not match the GSTIN?

Treat it as a red flag and query it with the counterparty before paying. Trade names can legitimately differ from legal names, but an unrelated name usually means the wrong number was quoted.

Can I verify a company without the GST number?

A definitive check needs the GSTIN. You can browse our business directory by name or city, but that is a starting point, not a verification.

Is this an official government check?

No. CheckYourGST is an independent verification service. We report what our commercial verification data source returns and are not affiliated with the Government of India.
