Frequently asked questions
What is a GSTIN?
A GSTIN is the 15-character Goods and Services Tax Identification Number issued to every GST-registered taxpayer in India. The first two characters are the state code, the next ten are the holder's PAN, followed by an entity number, a default letter and a checksum character.
How can I search a GST number?
Enter the 15-character GSTIN in the search box and select Search GSTIN. The result page shows the registration status and the registration details returned for that number.
How can I verify a GSTIN?
Verification means checking the number against a live registration lookup rather than only checking its format. Running a search on CheckYourGST performs that lookup and reports what the registry returns.
How many digits are in a GSTIN?
A GSTIN is exactly 15 characters long and mixes digits and uppercase letters. Anything shorter or longer is not a valid GST number.
What does an active GSTIN mean?
Active means the registration is currently live, so the holder is registered under GST and can legitimately charge GST on eligible supplies.
What does a cancelled GSTIN mean?
Cancelled means the registration has been surrendered or cancelled, so the number is no longer valid for charging or collecting GST from the cancellation date.
How can I check GST registration status?
Search the GSTIN and read the status field on the result page. Common values include Active, Cancelled, Suspended and Provisional.
What is the GST state code?
The GST state code is the two-digit prefix of a GSTIN that identifies the state or union territory of registration, for example 27 for Maharashtra and 36 for Telangana.
What information can GSTIN verification provide?
Depending on what the registry returns, a verification can show the legal name, trade name, status, taxpayer type, constitution of business, registration date, state and principal place of business.
Is CheckYourGST an official government service?
No. CheckYourGST is an independent GST search and verification service and is not affiliated with or operated by the Government of India.
