GST invoice verification

Check the supplier GST number printed on a bill before you approve it for payment.

Example:

What this check does

  • Confirm the supplier GSTIN on the invoice is a real, well-formed registration
  • Show the legal and trade name it belongs to, so you can compare with the invoice header
  • Show whether that registration is active, cancelled or suspended
  • Show the state code, taxpayer type and registration date where the source returns them

What it does not do

  • Validate the invoice document, its number or its date
  • Confirm the tax on the invoice was actually paid or reported
  • Check the invoice against GSTR filings or an e-invoice IRN
  • Confirm the goods or services were supplied

Reading the invoice header

The supplier GSTIN normally sits next to the supplier name at the top of the bill. Its first two digits should match the supplier's state, and characters three to twelve are the supplier's PAN — see GSTIN format for the full breakdown. For recurring suppliers, build the check into onboarding using supplier GST verification.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check a GST number on an invoice?

Copy the 15-character GSTIN from the invoice header and enter it in the search box on this page. The result shows the registration it belongs to and its current status.

Can I upload the invoice itself?

No. CheckYourGST verifies the GSTIN printed on the document, not the document. There is no invoice or e-invoice upload on the site.

The GSTIN is valid but the name differs from the invoice. What now?

A trade name can legitimately differ from the legal name. An unrelated name is a red flag worth raising with the supplier before you pay.

Does a valid GSTIN mean I can claim input tax credit?

Not on its own. Credit depends on the supplier actually reporting the invoice. An active registration is a necessary starting check, not a guarantee.
