GST Data Sources & Methodology

What information we show, where it comes from, how it is refreshed, and how to verify it independently.

What information CheckYourGST provides

CheckYourGST lets you look up a 15-character GSTIN and view the GST registration information returned for that number — legal name, trade name, registration status, taxpayer type, constitution of business, registration date, state and jurisdiction, and the principal place of business. We also publish reference material: GST state codes, GSTIN format explanations, HSN and SAC code lookups, GST rate references, a GST calculator and written GST guides.

Where the information comes from

GSTIN registration details are retrieved through a licensed commercial GST data provider that sources registration data from the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) public taxpayer search. We do not scrape the GST portal and we do not create GST records ourselves.

Reference content — state codes, GSTIN structure, HSN and SAC classifications and rate references — is compiled from publicly published government notifications and CBIC material. Where a specific rate or classification record has a published source, that source is shown on the record itself.

CheckYourGST is an independent GST information and verification platform. It is not the official GST portal and is not affiliated with GSTN or any government body.

How data is processed

When you enter a GSTIN we first validate its format and checksum locally, so an incorrectly typed number never triggers a lookup. Valid numbers are then checked against our stored copy of previously retrieved records. If we hold a recent record, we serve it and label it as served from cache. If we do not, or the record is stale, we request fresh details from the data provider and store the response.

We normalise names, addresses and status values for display only. We never fill in a missing field with an assumed or generated value — an unavailable field is shown as “—”.

How data is updated

Stored records carry a “last checked” timestamp, which is displayed on every result. You can force a fresh lookup at any time with the “Re-check” button on a result page. Older records are refreshed automatically the next time they are requested.

What may be incomplete

The provider does not return every field for every registration. Trade name, nature of business, jurisdiction detail and address components are frequently blank for smaller or older registrations. Recent changes — a new registration, a cancellation, an amendment or a change of address — may take time to appear in the source data. Contact details, turnover, filing history and financial information are not part of the registration data we receive and are never shown.

How to interpret a result

A status of Active means the registration was active in the source data at the time it was retrieved. Cancelled means the registration has been cancelled — either voluntarily or by the department. Suspended means it is temporarily inactive. A status alone does not confirm that a business is legitimate, solvent, or compliant with its return filings.

How to independently verify

For anything with financial, tax or legal consequence — input tax credit, vendor onboarding, contract execution — verify the GSTIN directly on the official GST portal at gst.gov.in under “Search Taxpayer”, and cross-check the details against the supplier's invoice, PAN and registration certificate. Consult a qualified tax professional where required.

Reporting incorrect information

If a record shown here is wrong or out of date, tell us via the contact page with the GSTIN and what is incorrect. Business owners can also claim their listing. We correct or remove records we cannot substantiate.

What we do not guarantee

We do not guarantee that information is complete, current or error-free, and we do not guarantee availability of the underlying data provider. CheckYourGST is an information and utility service, not tax, legal or financial advice, and it is not a substitute for verification against official sources. See our disclaimer and terms.
