What a GST number is, and what it contains

A GST number — properly a GSTIN, the Goods and Services Tax Identification Number — is the 15-character identifier issued to every person registered under GST in India. It replaces the older state VAT and service tax numbers and appears on every tax invoice the registered person issues. "GST number" and "GSTIN" mean the same thing.

The structure is fixed: 27 — the two-digit state code; AAACT2727Q — the ten-character PAN of the registered person; 1 — the entity number distinguishing multiple registrations on that PAN in that state; Z — a fixed character; and W — a checksum. Because the structure is arithmetic, a mistyped number usually fails the check before any lookup happens. The GSTIN format page breaks this down character by character.

How GST number search works here

Paste a 15-character GSTIN and you go straight to verification: registration status, legal and trade name, taxpayer type, constitution, registration date, state jurisdiction and, where the source provides it, the principal place of business. Type a business name, PAN, PIN code or city instead and we match against GST-registered businesses already recorded in our directory, and show the matching profiles.

The two searches behave differently on purpose. A GSTIN lookup goes out to our GST data source for that specific number. A name search does not — there is no live name-to-GSTIN lookup against the government register available to the public, so a name search can only find what is already in our directory. When nothing is found

A GSTIN that returns no record usually means one of three things: the number was mistyped, it was never issued, or the registration is too recent to have reached our source. Re-read the number from the original document, paying attention to the state code and the ten PAN characters, and try again. A name search that returns nothing simply means that business is not in our directory yet — verifying its GSTIN is what adds it.

What this search cannot tell you

Registration data covers who is registered and in what state that registration is. It does not include turnover, return filing history, tax paid, bank details or contact information, and none of that is shown here. A live registration is not evidence that a business is solvent, compliant or trustworthy.
