How to check GST registration status

Where registration status comes from, how to read it, and how often to re-check.

GST registration status describes whether a taxpayer's registration is currently active, cancelled, suspended, or not found on the system. It is the single most useful field returned by a GSTIN search.

To check it, run the 15-character GSTIN through a search. The status returned reflects the record at the time of the lookup. Alongside it you normally get the legal name, taxpayer type — regular, composition, casual taxable person, input service distributor and similar — and the registration date, which together give a fuller picture than status alone.

Not found is different from cancelled. Not found generally means no registration exists for that number, which usually points to a mistyped GSTIN or a fabricated one on an invoice.

For suppliers you pay regularly, a periodic re-check is worthwhile; monthly is a reasonable rhythm for material vendors. For one-off or high-value payments, check immediately before releasing funds.
