GSTIN vs GST number: is there a difference?

People searching for a "GST number" and people searching for a "GSTIN" are almost always looking for the same 15-character identifier. GSTIN — Goods and Services Tax Identification Number — is the formal term. GST number is the everyday shorthand.
The word GST on its own refers to the tax, not to any number. So "paying GST" is about the tax; "quoting your GST number" is about the registration identifier. The distinction only matters when precision is needed, for instance in a contract clause or a compliance policy.
