GST registration date: what it tells you

The date a registration took effect, and how to use it when reviewing older invoices.

The registration date returned by a GSTIN search is the date from which the taxpayer's GST registration took effect. It is a useful cross-check in two situations.

First, when reviewing older invoices. An invoice dated before the supplier's registration date cannot legitimately carry that GSTIN, because the registration did not yet exist. That is a straightforward red flag in a vendor audit.

Second, when assessing a new supplier. A registration created very recently is not a problem in itself — new businesses register every day — but it is a reason to apply the same care you would to any new counterparty, particularly on large advance payments.

Read the registration date together with status. An active registration with an old effective date and a matching legal name is the ordinary, unremarkable case. A very recent registration paired with unusually favourable pricing deserves a second look.
