How GST is calculated

To add GST: GST amount = base × rate ÷ 100. To remove GST from an inclusive amount: base = inclusive ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100).

For supplies within the same state, GST splits equally into CGST and SGST. For inter-state supplies the full amount is charged as IGST.

Need the opposite? Remove GST from an inclusive amount.

Adding GST to a taxable value

A GST-exclusive amount is the taxable value before tax — the figure you normally quote in a B2B price list. The tax is a straight percentage of that value, and the invoice total is the two added together.

GST = Taxable value × rate/100 · Invoice total = Taxable value + GST

A worked example

You quote ₹50,000 for a consignment taxed at 12%. The GST is ₹6,000 and the invoice total is ₹56,000. If the buyer is in your own state, the invoice shows ₹3,000 CGST and ₹3,000 SGST; if the buyer is in another state, it shows ₹6,000 IGST. The total is the same either way — only the split and the state of supply change.

When you need this

Raising a sales invoice, preparing a quotation, or checking that a purchase invoice from a supplier adds up before you record the input tax credit.

Limitations

The calculation uses the rate you enter and does not determine which rate applies, nor does it handle cess, reverse charge or composition-scheme supplies. Whether the supply is intra-state or inter-state depends on the place of supply rules, not on this tool.
