How GST is calculated

To add GST: GST amount = base × rate ÷ 100. To remove GST from an inclusive amount: base = inclusive ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100).

For supplies within the same state, GST splits equally into CGST and SGST. For inter-state supplies the full amount is charged as IGST.

Need the opposite? Add GST to a base amount.

Working backwards from a GST-inclusive price

A GST-inclusive amount is the figure a customer actually pays: the taxable value plus the tax. To split it you divide rather than subtract a percentage, which is where most manual errors creep in. The taxable value is the total divided by one plus the rate, and the tax is whatever remains.

Taxable value = Total ÷ (1 + rate/100) · GST = Total − Taxable value

A worked example

A shop receipt shows ₹1,180 inclusive of 18% GST. The taxable value is 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000, so the GST is ₹180. On a supply within one state that ₹180 is recorded as ₹90 CGST and ₹90 SGST; on a supply between states it is ₹180 IGST. Subtracting 18% of ₹1,180 instead would give ₹212.40 — a common and costly mistake.

When you need this

Retail and restaurant bills are usually quoted inclusive, so anyone reconciling till takings, claiming input tax credit from an inclusive receipt, or checking that a supplier split the tax correctly will work in this direction.

Limitations

The calculator applies the rate you enter. It does not decide which rate your supply attracts, and it does not cover cess, reverse charge, or composition-scheme treatments. Confirm the applicable rate for your goods or services before relying on the figures.
